Overview

Cold-water prawn is sold on count, and count is the only size language that works. Everything else on the specification exists to define what the count refers to: shell-on or peeled, cooked or raw, net weight or drained weight, brine percentage or glaze percentage. Get those four right and two offers become comparable.

Specifications

Size and weight grading

Grading is grouped by product form. Where more than one system exists they are kept apart — a band from one ladder is not the same commitment as a band from another.

Shell-on counts

Pieces per kilogram, shell-on, cooked.

  • 60/80 60–80 per kg
  • 80/120 80–120 per kg
  • 120/180 120–180 per kg
  • Custom specification We quote against your own band

Peeled counts

Pieces per kilogram, peeled, cooked.

  • 150/250 150–250 per kg
  • 250/350 250–350 per kg
  • Custom specification We quote against your own band

Need a different size? We quote against your own grading system rather than forcing a preset.

Attributes a buyer fixes in the contract for this form. Everything here appears in the quote configurator.

  • Weight basis A price against gross weight and a price net of glaze are not comparable.
  • Pack presentation

Drained weight, not pail weight

For prawns in brine the commercial weight is the drained weight, not the gross weight of the filled pail. Agree the drained weight and the brine percentage in writing, and state which one the price applies to.

A count only means something with a form attached

"80/120" is a shell-on count. The same prawns peeled will land in an entirely different count band. Always write shell-on or peeled next to the count.
